Ooh...I hate to be negative, but I really prefer both the film and the book to the manga. The manga focuses so much on the sex and the violence, and makes everyone look older (not to mention caucasian). If you like the manga at all, I bet you'll love the book and especially the film

Yeah, Ozu is sort of a "director's director;" film nerds love him, but he's not as widely known as Kurosawa. Personally all things considered, I prefer Kurosawa, but Ozu is great

I like the book too, even though I call it "pulpy;" it's like, it sort of has to be. It's a raw, pulpy story. But while I feel like Kazuo got shortchanged in the film, I liked Fukusaku's decision to simplify the evil girl (forget the name). In the book she has this tragic backstory; but in the film she has that great line: "I got tired of being a loser." She's just a jerk, and that becomes violent behavior in the Game
